What is your favorite genre of fiction?

Our family room bookshelf holds a splash of fiction. When handing over a novel, I often say Keep it or pass it on.

But my son’s room…his shelves still house make believe adventures I wouldn’t give up without a tussle.

Favorite fiction genre — you ask? I’m loathe to select a favorite anything.

If not snagged by a cover on a bookstore or library end cap, I search for fiction with history, philosophy, and realism. I prefer short and to the point.

Stephen King’s The Dome and Hillary Jordan’s When She Woke were pleasant sci-fi surprises. A lesson to step outside what I think I know about me.

I’m captured by stories with thought provoking, easy to follow lines — tales that guide without pushing.

Children’s Fiction — there, I choose!

A few characters who live inside me: Laura Ingalls, Ramona the Pest and her sister Beatrice, Fudge from Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, my dear Charlotte and Wilbur, Soren from Guardians of Ga’hoole, Jack and Annie from the Magic Tree House.

Authors who write for children capture, involve and teach with simplicity and precision. More adults should read stories built for young ears.

*Thank you Kerry Kuhn for a challenging question. Took me over 100 words to find an answer. :)
